Sergeant 4893 William BARKER
William BARKER was born in 1878 at No.8, Holt Village , the son of William and Harriet BARKER. His father was a traction engine driver. William enlisted in Worcester in 1914. He was in the 1 st Battallion , Gloucestershire Regiment – the “Glorious Glosters ” – Infantry Regiment and was killed in action on October 23rd 1914 aged 36 and is remembered with honour on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL - Panel 22 and 34
Private 325100 Ernest William BAYLISS
Ernest William BAYLISS was born on 16th June 1895. He was the son of William (Grocer) of Slate Firs, Drake Street , Welland . He started Welland school on 2nd September 1900. He joined the 1st /1st Queens Own Worcestershire Hussars (Worcester Yeomanry) and was wounded on the 9th January 1917. He went back to join his Regiment and was killed in action at the Third Battle of Gaza on the 8th November 1917, aged 22. He is buried at the GAZA WAR CEMETARY, ISRAEL . Grave Number XIX. D. 6.
Private 19588 Lugard Douglas BOSWELL
Lugard Douglas BOSWELL was born in Welland on 21st October 1895, the son of John and Blanche BOSWELL of Knights Farm Cottages, Welland . He started Welland school on the 20th March 1899 and enlisted in the 9th Battallion Worcestershire Regiment in 1915. As both his parents had passed away (his mother suffered from cancer and died in 1909 aged 46 and his father had died in January 1899 aged 38) he had lived with his elder sister Blanche in Drake Street , Welland before he enlisted. In June 1915, he wrote to his sister from the Med. asking for clean socks. After training in this country, he went with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in June 1915 and was killed in action at Gallipoli on 10th August 1915 aged 19 years. He is remembered with honour on the HELLES MEMORIAL, TURKEY - Panel 104 to 113.
Private 13170 George GINNIFER
He joined the 3rd Battallion , Worcestershire Regiment and was killed in action at the Battle of La Bassee on the 13th October 1914 aged 17. He is buried at the GUARDS CEMETARY, WINDY CORNER, CUINCHY, PAS de CALAIS , FRANCE . Grave No. IX.C.20
June 2011: The following information was provided by a family member:
"George GINNIFER was born on 1.3.1897, the third son of George Ginnifer (born 1860) and Gertrude Ginnifer (nee Lewis,
who was born in 1867). George attended Welland School between 1.2.1887 and 11.5.1901.
The family lived in Pheasant Row, Drake Street, Welland.
After the death of his mother in 1910, George ran away from home on a number of occasions to join the army but was brought back each time by his father. Finally, encouraged by a recruiting sergeant in the Worcester Regiment, George Ginnifer Snr., reluctantly, allowed his son to enlist. From sparse documentation held by the Regiment they have deduced that he joined in 1912 at the age of 15 years.
According to the records of the Worcester Regiment, Private 13170 George Ginnifer is shown on an embarkation roll for the 3rd Battalion in August 1914 which would indicate that he was in the first contingent of the Battalion to go France.
He was killed, by sniper fire, on the 13th October that same year, near La Bassee.
He is indeed buried in the Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France. He was 17 years old when he died.
George's Dead Man's Penny is in the possession of his cousin who resides in Hereford."
Private TR 7/7168 W.George HARWOOD
William George HARWOOD was born at Broad Green BROADWAS, Worcestershire on the 16 th September 1898. His father was ERNEST and his mother SARAH HARWOOD nee WESTON. He was living in UPPER WELLAND and worked as a gardener for Malvern Urban District Council when he enlisted as a Private in the 94th Training Reserve Battalion.
He died of Bronchopneumonia and Valvular disease of the heart ( mitral ) 2 years, in a Military Hospital at Chiseldon , Wilts and was buried in St.James Churchyard, Welland , Worcestershire on 28th April 1917 aged 18.
Private 125 Harry PHELPS
Harry PHELPS was born in Welland on 30th October 1891, the son of Thomas William (Farmer and Churchwarden) of the Malthouse Farm, Welland . He started Welland school on the 25tth January 1897 and then went on to Hanley Castle Grammar School . He helped his father on the farm until he emigrated to Australia when he was twenty. He enlisted in the 6th Battallion Australian Infantry on the 18th August 1914 and was killed in action at Gallipoli on 7th August 1915. He is remembered on the LONE PINE MEMORIAL, TURKEY number 27.
There is an inscription carved into the centre of the wall before the memorial. It says ‘ To the Glory of God and in lasting memorial of 3,268 Australian soldiers who fought on Gallipoli in 1915 and have no known graves and 456 New Zealand soldiers whose names are not recorded in other areas of the peninsula but who fell in the Anzac area and have no known graves; and also of 960 Australians and 252 New Zealanders who, fighting on Gallipoli in 1915, incurred mortal wounds or sickness and found burial at sea.'

PRIVATE Victor PUDGE was christened on June 26th 1887. His full name was Harold Victor PUDGE, but he was always known as Victor. He was born at the Note House, MARDEN, Herefordshire, the youngest son of a large PUDGE family - six sons and six daughters - whose parents were Henry and Mary PUDGE. His father was an innkeeper/carpenter at the Volunteer Inn, MARDEN. In the First World War, conscription was introduced in January 1916 for all men single or widowers (without dependants). Conscription was then extended to married men in May 1916. When Victor married May BARKER on May 1st 1916 he had been living at the Pheasant Inn, WELLAND , Malvern, Worcestershire with his parents. He and May made their home in Jesmond Cottage, UPPER WELLAND , Malvern Wells, Worcestershire . He joined the Army and was sent to France . He was in the 1st /5th Battallion , Gloucestershire Regiment, when he was killed in action on 13th April 1917. He is buried with honours at UNICORN CEMETARY, AISNE , FRANCE .

Percival Charles SUMMERS was born in Welland on 15th April 1892. He was the son of John and Alice SUMMERS of the Anchor Inn, Welland . He started Welland school on the 30th March 1897. He was in the 8th Battallion , Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), when he was killed in action on 6th April 1916. He was the husband of F.E.SUMMERS of 28, Rutland Gardens , Harringay , London . He is remembered with honour at the DRANOUTRE MILITARY CEMETARY, HEUVELLAND, WEST -VLAANDEREN , BELGIUM . Ref: 1.C.4.

William was born in Welland on 22nd November 1895 and was the son of William and Eliza TURNER of Lake Cottages, Welland . He started Welland school on 29th January 1900 and when he left he went to work for Elijah SMITH at Little Brookend Farm, Welland . Nora ROBERTS (nee SMITH and now deceased) remembered him as a cheerful young lad, who used to push her on her swing when she was a little girl. He was in “B” Battery, 84th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, when he was killed in action on 22nd October 1918. He is remembered with honour at the HIGHLAND CEMETARY, LE CATEAU, NORD , FRANCE . John WHITTERN was born at CHACELY, nr. TEWKESBURY , GLOUCESTERSHIRE on 30th September 1896. He was the son of WILLIAM (agricultural labourer) and ANN nee TUDOR. The surname on his birth certificate was WHITHORN but on the 1901 census it appeared as WHITTERN.
His address is given on the death certificate as Gilper Lodge, Hanley Castle , nr. Worcester and his former occupation was a Carter.
He was in the 8th Battallion , Worcestershire Regiment when he died of
1) Measles and 2) Broncho pneumonia
in the Field Ambulance Hospital , Abingdon Avenue , Northampton on 18th March 1915 aged 19. He is buried in St.James Churchyard, WELLAND , Worcestershire, by the North Wall.
